The Korf Foray
Held in honor of the late, great discomycetologist, Dr. Richard P. Korf, the Korf Foray is North America’s first and only ascomycete-focused taxonomic retreat, located in the heart of the hyperbiodiverse temperate rainforests of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Korf Foray is modeled after the meetings of the Pacific Northwest Key Council and the ascomycete field workshops of Europe, from Scandinavia to the Alps.
Field
Regular collecting in a curated selection of sites representing a range of unique habitats, located throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including an extensive trail network accessible mere feet from our front door.
Lab
24-hour access to the AHSLC facilities, including ample lab space, equipped primarily with participants’ own microscope(s) and photography equipment, with limited capacity for equipment "rentals."
Vouchers
Collections made to herbarium-grade standards, databased in accordance with National Park Service guidelines, tissue sampled on-site for DNA sequencing, and accessioned by the University of Tennessee Herbarium (TENN), with observations added to the Foray’s iNaturalist project.
Dr. Richard P. Korf
Professor emeritus of mycology at Cornell University, director emeritus of the Cornell University Plant Pathology Herbarium (CUP), and founding co-editor of Mycotaxon. A world-renowned alphataxonomist of the discomycetes, Korf trained 27 PhD students and described or reclassified hundreds of fungal taxa.
