The Highlands Biological Station:
From the HBS website: The Highlands Biological Station (HBS) is a multi-campus center of Western Carolina University consisting of academic research, teaching, and residential facilities as well as a natural history museum (Highlands Nature Center) and a 12-acre native plant botanical garden (Highlands Botanical Garden). The Highlands Biological Station is primarily University-supported, with additional funding provided by grants, program revenue, and the non-profit Highlands Biological Foundation, Inc. Our mission is to foster research and education focused on the rich natural heritage of the Highlands Plateau, while preserving and celebrating the integrity of the “biological crown of the southern Appalachian Mountains.” |

Lodging:
All prices include all program fees, four (4) days/three (3) nights stay, and eight (8) privately catered meals: $550/person - AirBnBs [LIMITED AVAILABILITY] Three picturesque, pre-booked properties (1, 2, 3) in downtown Highlands, conveniently located 1.2-1.7mi from HBS, with the capacity to sleep ~5 persons per property. Ideal for those seeking more private accommodations with increased amenities and creature comforts. Additional occupancy available pending increased registrations/demand. $425/person - HBS “The Duplexes" [SOLD OUT] Built in 2003, these are two adjacent apartments sleeping up to four people each. Each has a kitchen, living room, bath, and two bedrooms. HBS faculty and senior researchers are given priority for these residences. $395/person - HBS “Valentine House” [LIMITED AVAILABILITY] This is a historic (built in 1881) two-story wood-frame building with six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a dining room, breakfast nook, and a laundry/utility room. Formerly a private residence, it can accommodate 13 people, with two to three single beds per room and shared bath. $395/person - HBS “Howell Cottage” This is a one-story building divided into four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a common area. Completely renovated in 2018-2019, it can accommodate 17 people and has been completely updated including new bathrooms, heat, and air. Residents may utilize the adjacent Cottages Dining Room for meals. $395/person - HBS "Wright & Deacon Cottages" These are one-story buildings that can sleep up to 8 people each. These were recently renovated to include new bathrooms, heating, and air. Residents utilize the adjacent Cottages Dining Room for meals. |
